Noah and Micah at Four Months
Our little babies are now chunky four month olds who are taking in and "talking" about more of the world around them. They have started opening their hands and grasping things more, and especially like their Sophie and Fan Fan teething toys. They still enjoy sitting in their bouncer seats and staring at Mr. Frog, but their seats noticeably have gotten lower to the ground as the boys have gotten heavier. Micah's usually doesn't even clear the ground anymore! So, we'll be looking to replace the bouncers in the next month, but they were definitely handy while they lasted. Both boys are trying to sit up and look around more. I joke that they do better abdominal crunches then me now. Their head control has gotten pretty consistent and stable, and we've just started to put them in a jumper seat for a few minutes to practice their balance and control. The boys love it when we hold their hands and pull them into seated and sometimes standing positions. Then they just stand and look all around the room with an awed expression. They also like it when mama and dada make funny noises and faces, and treat us to lots of smiles and laughs. Seriously, baby laughs are the best sound in the world!
We just had the boys' four month check-up, and the results are in! Micah weighs 17 pounds 2 ounces (84th percentile compared to full term babies worldwide), with a height of 26.25" (93rd percentile), and a head circumference of 16 5/8" (72nd percentile). Noah remains about a half pound behind his little brother weight wise, weighing 16 pounds 9.75 oz (76th percentile), with a height of 25 5/8" (75th percentile), and a head circumference of 16.5" (72nd percentile). They've come a long way from being little preemies!
Sleep-wise, we are still lucky that they are sleeping through the night, with one dream feed around 10 pm. I think they've naturally pushed up their bedtime, which I hear is normal at this age, and now we start getting them ready for bed as early as 6:15 such that they're asleep before 7:00 on some days. They have started waking up before 7 am as well, usually around 6:30 or so. They eat sometime between 7 and 7:40, have some morning snuggles and maybe story time, and then it's time for nap #1. The past few days, this nap has lasted about 1.5 hours, whereas up to a week ago, sometimes the first nap would be pretty short, just 45 minutes. After they wake up, we play some more before it's time for meal #2, usually between 10:30 and 11 am. Then they go down for nap #2, which is usually 1.5-2 hours now. They have meal #3 around 2 pm, and then a shorter third nap of maybe 1-1.5 hours, depending on the previous naps of the day. We make sure they don't sleep past 5 pm and the past few days, 4:45 pm. They are getting good at putting themselves to sleep at nap times, and there are times during naps where I see one or both awake but then they put themselves back to sleep. They are both still sleeping in swaddles, but are outgrowing the largest size of the velcro ones. We've tried out the Aden and Anais Easy Swaddle, which is just okay. There are some transition swaddles I've been eyeing on Amazon that have zippers and zip off "wings" for letting one or both arms go free while transitioning out of the swaddle. Fingers crossed things go well when we need to cross that bridge!
On the home front, things are getting "real". We have purchased a beautiful new Honda Odyssey minivan, which means I am a minivan mom now! It's crazy to think about, but we really do need the space and flexibility that a van offers, especially if we want to go on any overnight trips (and I do!). I am also gearing up for my return to work next week. :( It makes me sad to leave my babies for so many hours in a day, but I'll be working from home twice a week to ease my pain. The nanny has been working part-time this past month, and I think the boys are used to seeing her and having her feed them bottles now. It was a struggle, but they finally aren't fighting the bottle. Our chunksters know they gotta eat! I'm so glad they're taking bottles better now, because it's one less thing to fret over with the changes coming with my return to work.
