October so far has been an interesting month, due to some behavioral changes in the boys and Natalie's return to work. To celebrate turning four months old, the boys had a series of vaccination shots which left them grouchy (for them) and maybe a little in pain. There were a couple of nights with night wakings, which they hadn't really had in weeks. We think the few night wakings after the pediatrician check-up were side effects of the shots because they went back to their normal sleep pattern after 3 nights. However, changes the next week, namely mom's return to work and some developmental bursts led to a couple more nights of night wakings (usually just one waking per night). We are pretty sure they were due to hunger (we tried to see if four daytime feedings were enough...not yet!) and/or just not being able to fall back asleep during a change in sleep cycles. We are doing some mild sleep coaching now to help establish healthy sleep and self-soothing, though to be honest, the boys are definitely good sleepers for naps and at night. They also really like their transition swaddles, which keeps their arms and hands up. The arm/hand wings are constantly wet because the boys can't get enough of sucking on them. Eventually, we'll unzip one arm and then then other, until the swaddle is turned into a wearable blanket.
The boys have outgrown their bouncer chairs, so we bought Fisher Price Infant to Toddler Rocker chairs for them. They seem to enjoy them, and we bring them out onto the patio to enjoy the fresh air. The elevated seat position lets them look around better, which they are very interested in doing now. Sometimes they'll make fake crying sounds because they want us to pull them into a seated or standing position. Both boys have also been rolling from their backs to their sides a lot these days. I'll put one down in the crib for a nap and they'll wake up in a totally different spot. This definitely cuts down on the ability to have both boys sleeping in the same crib.... changes will be coming to the nursery set up soon!
