Logan at One Month
It's hard to believe that our little baby Logan is a month old now! Today is her actual due date, and last Thursday, April 5th, was supposed to be her birthday according to my scheduled c-section...but here we are! First off: her stats! We had her one month check-up a few days ago, and her official weight was 8 pounds even, with a length of 21.5 inches. This means she has grown 3 inches in length and gained 2 lbs 10 ounces since birth; solid gains on the growth charts for both! I can never keep track of head circumference, but that too is growing well. As both a preemie and a newborn, most of Logan's days are spent eating and sleeping, and so most photos of her show her sleeping. Still, she is becoming more alert during the day, and is starting to have some solid wakeful periods. This time is great for play mat time, with and without her older brothers, tummy time, and some books with mommy.
As with most babies and young children, our days follow a repeated schedule, which works well for making general plans. Until a couple nights ago, we were following a standard 3-3.5 hour schedule, where we would wake her up to feed around the clock: 1:30 am, 4:30 am, 7:30 am, 11:30 am, 3:00 pm, 6:30 pm, 10:00 pm... We have gotten the "okay" from her pediatrician to feed her on demand now, and so now her feeds are more like: 8 am, 12 pm, 3:30 pm, 7 pm, 8:30 pm (cluster feed?), somewhere between 11 pm and 12midnight, and somewhere between 3:00 am to 4:30 am. Since she was (and is) a sleepy little girl, I first nurse her and then we offer her a bottle of pumped milk so she won't use up too much energy trying to nurse. This has worked well for us, and she is becoming a stronger nurser, so we don't always top her off with a bottle anymore. Night time feeds have remained bottle feeds of pumped milk though, so Mitch can help out. Mitch generally takes care of the first night feed, and I (Natalie) take care of the second one so Mitch can try to get in a longer stretch of sleep before the work day. This has worked well, and since she goes right back to sleep after eating at night, we can also go right back to sleep (knock on wood!).
There's not too much else to report on Logan for month one, since there aren't really any milestones this early. Still, it's been a great month for our new family of five! Looking forward to seeing how it all continues to evolve.
