Eleven Months!
Our little babies aren't little babies anymore. At eleven months old, just 31 days shy of one year, Noah and Micah are curious, crawling little people on the move. The twins will crawl to anywhere they want, pull up on anything the right height, and take some steps while holding onto the sofa (Micah can "walk" really well while holding onto the sofa). We have a safe zone set up in the living room, but it's a pretty confined play space. Current favorite toys and activities include playing with balls (small rattle balls, medium sized inflated balls, ball pits...), figuring out how the stacking cups work instead of just knocking them over, putting shapes in their container (though not through the shape holes yet), stacking rings, and playing mini basketball. Over the past weekend, we let the boys roam around the house while we followed them and they had a ball crawling in the kitchen, the hallway, their room, downstairs, and our room. Micah even climbed up all the stairs while dada kept close watch. Perhaps the most fun aspect of their crawling developments is when they crawl into our laps and give us hugs and snuggles. There are always new ways to make our hearts explode with love.
While Micah started crawling when he turned ten months, Noah just started really crawling on all fours over the past two weeks. However, he will often do a bear crawl with straight arms and legs, which makes us believe that he was holding out on crawling until he was closer to being ready to walk. He was like that with rolling over too: we knew he could do it, but he just didn't seem very interested in rolling around until he suddenly decided it was time. Noah has been very deliberate in the way he chooses to play lately. He will gladly sit by himself and examine things quietly. He seems curious in the way things work, and will do something over and over, like dropping a ball to the floor or spinning a loud toy, to assess the activity or toy. He also likes to play hide and seek with his toys, and is constantly hiding shapes and balls under the sofa or in the TV stand. Noah just started clapping over the weekend so we look forward to him doing lots of cute clapping when he finds his hidden treasures all around the house.
Micah has been very good-spirited the past month. He just laughs and laughs, and gets excited by all the things he gets to see and do now that he's super mobile. He has become a little parrot, and will copy whatever funny expressions or actions that dada is making/doing. Is this way, Micah has learned to play with toys like a wooden stacking set and the musical stack and ball game. He also thumps his chest if dada does that, has a fake cough when we fake cough, and will repeat words like "avocado" ("cado!"). He recently started saying "ball" while looking or playing with his toy boys, so I think he says it with intent now instead of just babbling. I wish I could say the same for when they say "mama" and climb into my lap!
The boys are eating more and more finger foods these days. Noah is especially big into cheese, and both boys still love their fancy bread. Other recent new foods: a pork, carrot, quinoa mash that I made from scratch (Micah liked it more than Noah), lemon scone (Noah like that more), raspberries (bigger hit with Micah). They still eat and enjoy avocados mashed with fruit and veggie purees, as well as yogurt for breakfast. Variations of eggs are a huge hit, especially egg, spinach, and cheese omelets, and they've enjoyed breakfast custard and strata that we got from Homestead (fancy farm-to-table restaurant in Oakland) two weekends in a row. They still have wake-up and bedtime nursing sessions, and pumped milk twice a day (around 11 and 4). In general, our boys have healthy appetites for everything!
Noah and Micah are still on a two nap schedule, but are pushing their nap times later and later as they've increased their wake times. Sometimes, we (including Norma) think they're getting ready for their one nap transition, but they're not quite there yet. A lot of times, we will put them down for a nap or for the night, and they will immediately stand or sit up in their cribs, jabber away, and eventually fall asleep, usually one at a time. Occasionally, the one who falls asleep gets woken up by his brother who is loudly playing and laughing in the crib next to him (usually it would be Noah getting woken up by Micah), and Norma needs to take matters into her own hands (literally...she will take one baby out of the nursery and let him get back to sleep in her arms). Norma tried out a nap time separation using a travel crib in our room last Friday morning, but Noah still took a shorter nap. Either way, they're getting around 2.5 hours of combined sleep from their naps, and about 10-10.5 hours at night. They've been falling to sleep around 8 pm lately, and waking up between 6:10-6:40 am. It's like they know that the days are longer and the nights are shorter, but at least they're sleeping solidly through the nights. Once we hear them start making noise in the morning, we let them play in their cribs until we're ready to get out of bed, generally 6:50 or 7, and then we all get the day started. Usually, we are greeted with two smiling faces poking out of their cribs while they eagerly stand up waiting for our arrival. So cute.
